Install Pinpoint
Everyone who wants to draw or capture in the call needs the extension. It takes one minute.
Steps
- Download the extension (zip file) and unzip it. You get a folder named pinpoint-extension.
- Open chrome://extensions in a new tab. You have to type this address, because Chrome blocks links to it.
- Turn on Developer mode (top right).
- Select Load unpacked and choose the pinpoint-extension folder.
- Pin Pinpoint to the toolbar with the puzzle icon so you can find it during calls.
In a call
- Open your call in the browser: Google Meet, Zoom (join from your browser) or Teams on the web.
- Select the Pinpoint icon, or press Alt+Shift+P. A small toolbar appears at the top right with Box already on. There is nothing to set up: everyone with Pinpoint in the same call is in the same session automatically.
- Drag over any part of the screen, or click two corners. A comment box opens beside it. The first time, add your name. Type and press Enter.
- Pinpoint saves the whole screen, with your area outlined and your comment on it. Anyone can open the thread and select Save image or Copy image.
- Presenting? Share a Chrome tab, then select the Pinpoint icon on that tab too. Your viewers’ marks appear on your real page, in the same spot they drew them.
- No mouse? Open Comments on the toolbar and choose Mark with keyboard.
- Teams on the web doesn’t show which call you are in. Open Comments, copy your code and share it. Others paste it under “Join a teammate’s session”.
Screen captures and privacy
Meet, Zoom and Teams do not tell anyone when someone takes an ordinary screenshot. They cannot see it happen. They only announce recordings and transcripts.
Pinpoint does more than that:
- Every capture is announced to everyone in the session, with the name of the person who took it.
- The host can turn captures off at any time, for example while sensitive information is on screen.
- Pictures are private. Only people in the session can see them, through links that expire after an hour.
- The host can delete the whole session and every picture in it.
Pinpoint cannot stop someone from taking a screenshot with their computer. Nothing on the web can. If a screen holds information people must not keep, say so before you share it, and ask the host to turn off captures.
